In the dimmness of the forest, one didn't always find it easy to tell what time of day it is. The sunlight barely filters through the trees at some points.
In a small thicket a spring of the purest water flows from the rocks, and forms a pool that is wide and deep. Few humans ever go here. This is a place of magic, one of the few left relatively untouched.
~ The time is very early, before dawn. The forest is so quiet that when the wind blows a needle off of a pine tree, you may indeed hear it fall. The silence is eerie, but fleeting. A moment later, from a path leading into an even darker part of the forest, a woman in a deep blue dress and black hair comes walking. Her dress glitters with tiny specks of silver, and she is joined by a lady in silver, who has long grey hair. They sit at the spring, remaining silent.
From another path on the opposite side, a gentle, soft voice starts to hum. The voice is feminine and soon joined by another. The minute sounds of the forest seem to melt away into the background as they start to sing. The first comes visible and she has fiery red hair and golden eyes, and her gown shimmers both in gold and yellow. The second is a woman with long white hair to her waist and piercing blue eyes. She wears a gown of a much lighter blue.
The two approach the women who are seated, and raise their voices in song to greet the coming day. Then all falls silent. The dark woman is the first to speak.
"Aurora, Azure, a pleasure to see you on this night." Her voice is a whisper as soft and tender as the ngiht wind itself. The lady in gold smiles softly and shakes her head. "No my dear Eve, it is night no longer. The day is beginning, or we wouldn't be here. You and Luna must depart, as is the nature of things." Her voice is gentle but it holds the warmth of the coming daylight.
Eve nods, her dark tresses covering her face. "Very well, blessed be, and now we shall."
With that, the two mistresses of the night walk hand in hand down the path the ladies of day just traversed. Aurora turns to Azure giving her a nod and together they walk off in the other direction, and the sun slowly rises. In the other direction, night spreads slowly.
The ritaul is as old as life itself, but every hundred years or so new ladies come to assume the roles. This is the third year for these four. Without them, day and night would cease to exist, a very sobering thought. They meet here because it how things have always been done.
